De Nieuw-Zeelandse tiener Joshua Styla (17) begon dik een jaar geleden met beats maken. Nu luistert de hele wereld naar zijn muziek.
En dat dankzij TikTok.
Zeventienjarige dj
Styla, die zich ‘Jawsh 685’ noemt als dj, zag het niet aankomen, maar dankzij de populaire app TikTok gaat zijn track de hele wereld over. Nadat hij zijn nummer Laxed (Siren Beat) op YouTube zette – zonder al te veel verwachtingen – gebeurde er weinig met het nummer, net als bij de meeste beginnende dj’s en artiesten.
Maar toen pakten TikTok-gebruikers de beat van Styla op. Iedereen maakte er video’s en danspasjes op en ze deden elkaar massaal na. Jennifer Lopez en Jimmy Fallon bleven niet achter en dansten mee op de melodie van de onbekende scholier uit Auckland, Nieuw-Zeeland.

Nog meer bekenden
Jawsh 685′ succes werd pas écht groot toen Jason Derulo met zijn beat aan de haal ging. De zanger maakte een eigen versie en bracht die uit onder de naam Savage Love. In eerste instantie zonder toestemming van Styla, die ook niet wist wat hij aan moest met de berichten die hij kreeg van Derulo.
Inmiddels heeft Styla een platendeal, een manager en zit het rechten-technisch helemaal goed. Op onder andere YouTube staat de dj vermeld als producer en komt een deel van de verdiensten waarschijnlijk ook netjes zijn kant op.

Droomwereld
De zeventienjarige vertelt aan de Nieuw-Zeelandse radiozender RNZ Music dat het als een droom is. “Ik zag het niet aankomen. Ik deed wat ik altijd deed: naar school gaan, thuiskomen en dan beats maken. En nu geef ik ineens interviews…” Ook in Nederland wordt de jonge dj gewaardeerd: zijn nummer staat in de 538 TOP 50.
